Action plan – Carbon College (example only)

Doubling the number of recycling bins in our schoolyard

Carbon College currently has one glass recycling bin, one plastics recycling bin, and one paper recycling bin for every six classrooms. In some areas of the school, such as the junior quadrangle, there are no recycling bins within 500m. The recycling bins that we do have are used and often overfull. After a visit from the Enterprising Roadshow team, it became clear that recycling more is one of the best ways that Carbon College could reduce carbon emissions and that providing bins for every three classrooms is the most cost-efficient way for us to do this. This is also in keeping with our school’s commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle.

This action plan is going to be implemented by the Student Council, with the assistance of the Head Teacher, the Bursar and the Senior Science Coordinator. The Bursar can advise on costs, the Head teacher can ensure that the policies and limitations of the school are considered and the Science Coordinator can be the main point of contact for students in the council. Other students will be appointed particular tasks throughout implementation of the action plan, as they arise.

Step One

Objective – Decide precisely how many of each bin is required and where they need to go

Responsibility – Year 10 student reps, in consultation with students from all year levels

Deadline – End of week three

Step Two

Objective – Source quotes from several suppliers

Responsibility – Year 11 student reps, in consultation with the Bursar

Deadline – End of week six

Step Three

Objective – Get the most suitable quote approved by the Senior Management Team

Responsibility – Year 11 student reps, with assistance from the Head Teacher

Deadline – End of week nine

Step Four

Objective – Contract the supplier and organise installation

Responsibility – Year 12 student reps

Deadline – End of week twelve

Step Five

Objective – Inform students, teachers etc of the expected date of the new bins arrival and remind everyone how and why to use them

Responsibility – All student council reps

Deadline – Installation date (to be determined at step four)

We will know if our action plan has been successful if we increase the column of material that is recycled and reduce the amount of general waste. When the bins are installed, we will allocate responsibility for sourcing this information and graphing it, and making it available to the school body and setting ongoing goals for the reduction of waste.
