Guidance for participating schools
 Guidance for participating schools

The guidance below will help you prepare for participation in Enterprising Science. Should your application be successful, we will send you a copy of this guidance and you will need to confirm that you can fulfil the requirements by returning the document signed by you and your head teacher.

Our commitment for the Carbon Challenge roadshow

  1. We undertake to accommodate, for each school, up to 180 14–16 year olds, split between two sequential identical two-hour sessions.
  2. We will provide three trained roadshow leaders to deliver these sessions. We will ensure that all roadshow leaders have been CRB checked.
  3. We will provide all equipment needed on the day, with the exception of writing materials and items listed in the table below.
What we need from applicants

In order for us to run the Carbon Challenge roadshow successfully, we need the support as listed below. We will endeavour to accommodate all reasonable requests to vary any of our requirements, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet all such requests.

Requirements
1. Send one Science teacher to attend a regional Talk Science master class.
2. Make a hall or similar large internal space (suitable for 90 students) available for the WHOLE day, from one hour before the first session.
3. Make two classrooms available from one hour before each session and throughout both two-hour sessions.
4. Enable us to lock the hall and classrooms or assist us to develop another suitable security arrangement.
5. Ensure three teachers are available to supervise at all times during the activities on the day. This may involve more than three teachers working in shifts but the contact teacher must be available at all times should queries arise and must take responsibility for organising teacher cover.
6. Name a single teacher contact for communication before the day and provide both in-school and personal telephone and email contact details for this teacher.
7. Obtain the head teacher’s approval.
8. Inform us in advance of the number and age of students attending and ensure the total is no more than 180 (90 per session), all within the 14–16 age range.
9. Inform us in advance of any student special needs and assist us in providing appropriate support.
10. Provide a power supply in the hall and each classroom.
11. Provide a white space, screen or interactive whiteboard at the front of the hall and each classroom onto which we can project from a laptop.
12. Arrange tables in the classrooms in five groups, each with space for six students.
13. Prior to our visit, divide the students for each two-hour session into three groups of a maximum of 30 students and ensure students are in these groups at the start of the session.
14. Inform key members of the school community of our visit and make any necessary arrangements for our access to the building and parking.
15. If required, allow us to record the day's activities on film and/or to take photographs for use on our website and/or in other publicity material. Co-operate with us on any relevant publicity initiatives we instigate. You will be notified in advance if this is required.
16. Work with your students to reduce your school's carbon emissions after the Carbon Challenge roadshow. Submit evidence of the actions taken and their outcomes to the Enterprising Science website (www.enterprisingscience.com).
